or "Chickens: the Gateway Animal".
My, my. It has been a very long time. And I haven't written any of the posts that I planned in my head to write. I still on planning on getting to those, but since this was quick and easy, I thought I'd share this first.
But, lo and behold, in a few months, I too will be the proud owner of acreage in the Mid-West. (Carbondale, Illinois to be precise.) I love saying that word: acreage. (!!!) I am busily planning and pinning-away on pinterest all of the dreams and hopes that were birthed long ago when I had chickens. So, yes, we can blame the chickens. It started out with urban backyard chickens but that just wasn't enough.
I found this video of a father and his grown children in Pasadena, California who produce 6,000 pounds of vegetation on just 1/10 acre. That is simply amazing and astounding. And yet they manage to do it right in the middle of the city. So, I suppose that acreage is not required to live out your agrarian dreams but I am over-the-moon excited about mine.
I love how the owner says at the end that his self-sufficiency is really the path to freedom and then you see the name of his urban homestead is exactly that: "the Path to Freedom."
So far, our path to freedom includes a garden, chickens, bees, sheep, and rabbits. Eventually goats and alpacas. I'd love any advice!! Just lob it at me and I'd be ever so grateful.
